Jerome Bottomly to Abigail E. Bottomly, 28 July 1863
Warrenton Va July 28th 1863
Dear Mother
I received your letter written last week last night I received all my back mail last week. there was six letters and two papers. There was a paper came last night with a list of the drafted. I suppose a great many will pay their 300 dollars rather than come out I wrote my last letter on the 13th but did not send it till I saw Wiley. The afternoon after I wrote the letter we had to march and that night we camped close to Sharpsburg the next day we marched to Harpers Ferry over the very same road we came over last / year. I saw Wiley a week ago last Friday. he made his appearance quite unexpected to me but I was glad to see him. That afternoon we marched to Berlin and I went to see him there but he had gone We crossed the river at Berlin on Sunday and arrived at this place last Friday at 12 oclock at night The reason we got here so late was because we did not start till most dark from White Plains where we were camped that is 12 miles from here.
One thing I have enjoyed since we came into Virginia this time that is picking and eating the blackberries I never see them so thick and so many of them. we all had just as many as we were mind to pick We have been laying still since we came here there is ten or a dozen off today laying out some kind of earth works /
I have had a chance to draw clothing when I wanted it and have not suffered for food. There is considerable advantage in being independent of any corps and traveling with head quarters. we can march easier and have a better chance to draw clothing I would like to be haying this month first rate just for a change
I dont know as I have any thing more to write. if you go to South Royalston, Wiley will tell you that I am in good health I guess.
