Dear Sister Nancy
I suppose it is about time for me to inform you again of my whereabouts &c
I am in the same camp that I was in two weeks ago, the last time I wrote. You had not got my letter on the 4th, and if it was missent you have very likely been anxious to know the reason why. I should have written as soon as I received your letter but my time has been occupied entirely. The army is working building a line of redoubts and / forts. "C" company has had one with three or four thousand infantry, and the the last five days I have been out all the time, some days from 4 in the morning, every day from 6. last night I came in at 9 today at 2 but I expect I shall be out part of the night, for some of the infantry are there all the time
Our duties are easy compared to the infantry though we have it rough enough. On this fore noon I had 60 men from the 32nd Mass. I had to tell the non com what to have his men do. they were carrying logs and placing them on the parapet. I do not get so soft a job all the time, but our business is to keep the / thing in shape. I does not look much like a siege I hear the rebs are in Maryland and I hope we will have to go there. it is very dusty here there has been no rain of consequence
I suppose people are haying north. wish I could go after some blueberries.
We have had a decided change in rations due partly to the sanitary commission. for two months I eat nothing but beef, hard bread and coffee, and two or three rations of pork myself the cook.
I am sorry to know Billy Silcox is dead. I have inquired for him several times but never knew that he was in the army.
I have received a letter from Cornelia but have not answered it.
My tea is ready so I will close—we have tea for a change—I like coffee best
come to find out I shall have to cook my tea myself so I will break off—
Jerome
I hope my next will be from Maryland Grant can be flanked as well as Little Mac
