James G. Hunter to Peter M. Crist, 14 February 1862
Bloomfield Feb 14 1862

Dear Brother
I once more take my pen to inform you that we are all well and still residents of Bloomfield but that our post office adress is Birmingham Oakland County Michigan

I have written to you several times and last of all to Thomas without receiving any answer and do not know that you reside at Plainfield or not or wether this will reach you or not. I saw Mr Barkley yesterday and had a conversation with him about that money that is in his hands belonging to your children he told me he had advertised it and that the time as is nearly up that your children can claim / it and that he had made some expence in advertising and wished me to take the money in my hands. I told him I would not have any thing to do with it now untill I heard from you as he had refused to take my receipt for it on its first arrival and would not part with it unless he had a receipt from the heirs or you receipt as guardian of the heirs which fact I have written to you before and also to Thomas last fall but have not had any answer nor received any receipt I wrote to Thomas and directed to Jolliett and state the above to him and also to know of him if he did not want a apprentice as my oldes boy wished to learn the blacksmith buisness but he did not receive it or / else he did not think proper to answer it and his Uncle in the city of Detroit got him a situation My three eldest children are in the city the girls are at their Uncles and Thomas learning his trade so that I have but two at home I [faded, paper fold] on the line of the Detroit and Millwaukee Rail Road between Birmingham & Pontiac My nearest office is Birmingham which office you will please to direct all communications and as soon as I receive a receipt from you I will forward it to Mr Barkley and if you wish I will male the money in the presance of Mr Barkley and forward it to you on your own risk

When I first wrot to you about the money he said I could have it by giving my receipt for it / But before I received any answer from you his attorney advised him not to part with it unless he had a receipt from the heirs and also that if the money remained in his hands a certain length of time without being called for in a legal manner he could advertise in the state paper a certain time and if not called for he could appropriate it to his own use which fact I did not learn untill yesterday. He is now in very delicate health and may be called away suddenly and is anxious to have the matter settled and wished me to take it and do with it as I pleased which I utterly refused untill I hear from you Write as soon as you receive this and send a receipt and I will attend to it immediately

Yours affectionately
    J G Hunter
