Lyons March the 1 1864

Dear Mother I seat my self to right you a few lines to let you know how we get along We are all as usual except mary and she has set a good part of the day She has not been so smart as usual but she is gaining pretty fast now. We have Dory to do the work she gets along with all of it but taking care of Mary and that I do myself for I can do it better than she can and you know that I am a good hand I dont think that you would have done better your self that is my notion as for the news in jeneral their is nothing of intrust that I can think of except that Ned Lizer has enlisted and Wesley has rote home to ask father and mother what he sall do whether to enlist or not as for the children they are as healthy as ever and are growing as fast as common Wesley is a great deal of help to Mary and me and Lily says she is out beating the pigs a growing she is a good deal fleshier than she was when you was here last fall and as saucy as she can be since Mary was sick we have not got / a name for the baby yet and I guess that it will have to find its one name It weighs 12 pounds and in six day it gained one pound I guess [?] iowa folks cant beat that Now tell Parna that if she is as hard up for a fellow as the old wimen are here I must pitty her for if a stragler comes along they all most fight for him and set up nights thinking how they can fool that fello and git him away from the other this the third letter and we would like some of the answers it is ten Oclock and all to bed and I must close give my love to all and except a portion for your self
good Night
