Unknown to Unknown, undated
Saturday night almost Eleven Oclock
I have swept out my tent, made my bed, not on the floor to night though I often do when it is cold, for tis warmer, as the cot is a warm weather institution. they are narrow and let the cloths hang over the edge. I thot I had finished this letter but forgot to tell you I had some roast turkey nice cake &c &c for supper. it was sent from Ind. by a sister & mother of a young man in Co. 'G' he is Company Commissary Sergt and comes to me every day to get his companies rations we had a good supper. with us was (Caleb Smith) a theatrical performer (we have several in the Regt) here in the camp he is Provost Sergt. has charge of the prisoners that have to work and live on bread and water. last week he had 29 men on bread and water, and as many more at hard labor. Well just before I finished the other sheet to night the Adjutant came in and wanted me to play chess. he can beet me playing chess. So I set my extra duty man / to beet him playing chequers he is pretty good at it but the Adjutant was too many for him so I hurried to get done, and beet him 3 games right off. the Adjutant loves to play chess and chequers. I know I do. there is a great deal of card playing in camp but there is too much gambling with it for me. I know several men that has made several hundred dollars. here it is singular how extravagant some men are here men who have wives & families suffering at home
Tomorrow will be Sunday. the camp is all cleaned up to day. our camp will be full of visitors if it is a fair day. The health of the camp is very good. The Quarter Master has gone back to Ind. for a week or so The Qr. Master Sergt is sick and I have it all to attend to, and keeps me trolling most of the time. tis not as easy a place as I suppose the writing is more than all the other work every thing is duplicated & red taped.
The fire has gone out, the Eleven Oclock relief guard has gone on the 9 Oclock guard come off and gone to bed, and this page is about full, now aint it
