William H. Thurston to Laura J. Morgan, 27 February 1864
Chester Hospital Feb 27, 1864

Laura, I have written some to send to you yesterday as we expected to leave for Washington this morning, but we cannot go until six oclock to knight therefore I will write a little more and send all together. I also looked to get an answer to the letter I wrote to you on the 23rd but have not recd it yet. I recd the papers you sent me and I am thankful for them. I expect ere this reaches you we will be in Washington I would much sooner go directly to the front than be confined as we are here. Cannot enjoy myself here. I feel lost and cannot account for it.

I have written to your Uncle Grier to get some information as to the local bounty in Sunbury but I have perused the papers you sent, and could not see that any thing is going to be done, so I have come to the conclusion since Sunbury cant pay a little, to have my credit given to some other place in the county as I am credited to the county at large, and no particular borough or township, I can with but little trouble do so. the most of the citizens of Sunbury think they can have our credit whether they pay bounty or not. I have went to the highest officials in the city and have ascertained to a certainty that I can give my credit to any place in the county, and since all of our Company are doing so, a couple of hundred is as good for me as any one else.

I should not have done so but almost every place pays bounty except Sunbury. Delaware County pays $350 and some places more.

I will soon close this letter looking for an answer soon. give my kind regards to your family and friends, also tell me all the good news you know, from yours and most Affectionately
            WHThurston

P.S. give the same address until I tell you different. the letters will be forwarded wherever we are.

I feel much better to day and will soon be clear of the cold, if nothing more serious follows.
