Laura, your kind letter came to me last night, which afforded me much pleasure to read, although I am exceedingly sorry that I wrote to you in a manner to wound your feelings. I assure you I did not write thus with a spirit of revenge what prompted me to do so was this. heretofore your letters came regular, and in this case, 17 days had elapsed from June first until 17th for this reason I felt as though something had happened and I desired to remove the suspense as soon as possible. I have not for one moment thought since I left you that you was deceiving me as you seem to accuse me, but I will in the future endeavor to not permit one scratch from my pen to cause you pain I hope you will not look at the subject in this way

those beautiful green leaves reminds me of home, and the fair one who sent them to me. I receive them as a token of love.
I will not say much regarding the war this time. I cannot to tell the truth give a glowing account. therefore at the present time I will not write to discourage the people. the siege goes on slowly. Shot shell and musket balls constantly pitched to and fro with but few casualties on either side it rained all knight the breeze is cool and pleasant. we have just received soft bread potatoes and pickles. we have plenty of good grub, as the boys call it. I expect Brother here to pay me a visit to day. he is well and likes to play soldier. his Company numbered 75 men last winter and now 20, all lost during this / fearful campaign. I cannot see how the poor boy escaped death. his clothes and accoutrements have been pierced with balls several times that he has shown me, but it is a fact I have myself escaped many times and I know not how. I still hope that we both may come home alive and unhurt.
I will be compelled to close soon. I must go and see about rations. remember me kindly to the family and write soon.
I remain your true and sincere friend
