William H. Thurston to Laura J. Morgan, 3 September 1864
Camp in front of Petersburg
Sept 3d 1864

Dear Laura I have just recd your note of the 26th Aug mailed 31st stating that you was paying the long expected visit. I hope you may enjoy the time, unusually pleasant. I cannot understand why you do not get my letters. I wrote three last week. most certainly something must interfere, otherwise my letters would come to hand more regular. I am well and hearty we have had some beets, fish and vegetables this week, also fresh bread.

I have not seen Brother, but I understand he is safe, which will please Mother and Father. I was so afraid something had happened him.

the weather is cool and pleasant a coat comes good indeed I wish for my extra blanket. the winter is fast approaching we must soon build huts to keep us warm. I was sure we would not need to stay another long winter here but I have with thousands of others been doomed to disappointment, but we will wait anxiously for the end. I am sure the end must come sooner or later.

it has been comparatively quiet since the battle at Kearns Station. Some piquet firing this morning which may at any moment bring on a general engagement. the new recruits are coming to the Army in considerable numbers. I hope Penna will fill her quota without the draft

I must soon close my letter looking for you to answer soon. remember me kindly to the Rush friends providing you are there. also your family.

            I remain your true friend
