William H. Thurston to Charles B. Brockway, 14 November 1864
Camp in Front of Petersburg

Lieut C B Brockway Dr Sir
We regret to learn that circumstances will not permit you to be with us any longer. And we sincerely desire you to accept this our humble request as a token of love and respect. We miss you much and fully appreciate your good qualities as an Officer and a Gentleman we have followed you from Winchester to Petersburg through the various fortunes of this Army. We have always known you to be brave, kind and generous to a fault, always ready to favor. Well do we remember in every battle whether victory or defeat attended our efforts, / your presence inspired us with renewed courage and determination. When we look to the ever memorable Battles of Gettysburg, Antietam Fredericksburg Chancellorsville Bull Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania and many others which will help to fill histories page, tired and exhausted when disaster threatened our gallant Army, when stout hearted men commenced to doubt, your cheering words, entreating us to stand firm, still remain fresh in our memories. We cannot forget you. Though we may be separated for a time we hope whatever may be your pursuits you will prosper and when peace and happiness reunites this people to meet / you and live a life devoted to love and truth.

With the prayer that God will bless and angels guard you until you reach the paradise of heaven,
