William H. Thurston to Unknown, November 1864
The Election has passed quietly A Lincoln will be President four years longer. We must not be discouraged. I supported McC. neither am I ashamed for the world to know it. I done so with a conscience that I was voting for one who would uphold law and liberty. I still love Genl McClellan neither will I forget him because he was beaten. tis the duty of every true Democrat to put forth still greater efforts to stem the tide that now bears down so heavily upon our people. let us not cease working until we have redeemed our suffering humanity from the thrawldom of a party who are seeking the overthrow of our Republick.

It is getting quite late and I must close. the Bugle has sounded its last note. Lights out. the knight is dark, the wind moans, and howls through the trees and branches. My thoughts with thousands of others wanders homewards. Could I come, and say the sword was sheathed forever, I am here I would be more happy than here in my little log hut ten by five sitting by a blazing fire of logs, freezing on one side and roasting on the other, not knowing what moment we may be called to the front and perhaps be engaged in the work of death.

but we have become a wicked people and God will chastise us for our wickedness and soon I hope that we will be blessed with a peaceful / and a happy land.
remember me kindly to Griers family and yours. please write when convenient. I know you have not much time to spare with correspondents I dont expect it.
I recd a letter from Landau to knight he is well. I have not heard from him lately. excuse my short and poor letter. hoping that you may all be well and happy
I remain
