William H. Thurston to Laura J. Morgan, 10 December 1864
Camp in front of Petersburg
Dec 10th 1864
Laura,
Your kind letter of the 8th Dec came to hand this evening finding me well. I was much pleased to hear from you again and that you was well. this is a cold bleak day and I expect a cold rough knight. I have had a hard week. I have been on the front line with my section. I am in Fort Bross. My quarters are poor and I almost freeze during the knight. I expect to be relieved in a few days and then I will come back to my old quarters. I am one mile from camp and I have just come in for my supper. / I have but little to say as regards the Army. parts of the 2nd 9th & 8th Corps have gone out on the left but what they have done I am unable to say the weather has been so bad that they have had but little chance for success. we hear but little regarding Shermans movements through Georgia but I look every moment to hear something good or how much depends here upon his campaign but I hope and pray that we need not move again this winter I am heartily sick and tired of moving in the mud. quiet prevails along their entire lines. Not enough to disturb our peaceful slumbers.
Laura, I will ask you to my wedding will you come. I / wonder who they think I am going to marry. I suppose some one I never thought of. Well this is they way of our world and was it not for the people and their silly talk I should call it a dry world and we would all get the blues.
As for coming home, all I will say or can is I will come if possible and when I come you will see me. I will make no promises, but will come when you least expect me.
I must now close and go back to fort Bross. please excuse my short and poor letter and so soon as I am relieved I will write more satisfactory
I remain yours
Lieut W H Thurston
