My Own Dear Laura
I have arrived here safely, last knight at 8 Oc I am quite well but I have not recovered fully from what took place when I left you. I could not bear to leave you, but I know that I was compelled to go, and I did not give vent to my feelings but I hope that my life will be spared until I can return to her whom I so dearly love. I went to Fords Theatre at 8½ Oc and retired to bed at 10. Oc the plays were good but I could not enjoy them. I slept some as I was worn out for want of rest. I woke up during the knight to think of her who loves me so tenderly. tis hard I know but / one bright hope I have to meet you again when I know we will be happy, only be of good cheer. do not worry about me, I will do well.
I will not get back to my Compy before Thursday. I must go to Alexandria to knight to get my pass and transportation to City Point. I intend going through the Capitol this afternoon. I wish you was here to accompany me. I could be so happy.
I did not get to see your Pappa when I left Sunbury. I looked for him but was disappointed.
The city is full of people Congress is in session. Penna Avenue is crowded with people from all parts of the world. The sun shines warm, and the hills are covered with snow. / had I known that I could not leave Washington until tomorrow I would have staid at Baltimore, tis more pleasant than here, although our accommodations are good at $4.00 per day. I will have to close and when I get back to camp I will write again and tell you all. remember me kindly to your family. I am yours in sincerity and love,
Lieut WHThurston
