William H. Thurston to Laura J. Morgan, 30 March 1865

March 30th 1865

Dear Laura,
Your kind letter came to hand this morning, finding me well. tis raining fast with plenty of mud. the Army is all in motion and a great battle is near at hand. the fighting was heavy on the left yesterday and last night, but I am afraid the rain will prevent important movements and stop us for the present. I hope not as I am anxious to go on until we accomplish what the people expect and what we should for the welfare of the nation

We recd a short letter from Lt Campbell. he says he will return on the 2nd April. he has not said one word about his getting a wife / and I suppose he thinks we know nothing about it. how are you, by the way. I suppose they are happy so long as the moon shines, you know what I mean.

I do not think that Andy will come home as the Army is on the move. we are moving toward the left, to open communication with Sherman. We have our Baty in Fort Gregg near Hatchers Run. how long we will stay I cannot tell but at the longest only a few days. the battle raged last night till 9 Oclock. the wounded are coming in in large numbers. we have not been engaged yet but expect to every moment. we have captured some prisoners and thus far all looks cheering and we hope to achieve a great victory fighting has commenced this moment on the left the creeks are bank full / and the rain continues to fall. I hope it may clear off.
I have no doubt Sunbury looks bad since the great waters have swept through it. I should like to be there to see it and some one too but this is out of the question as we have enough to do here, and must remain, but I think by next winter those who live will come home and in peace and safety.

I have no time to write more to day as I must go over to Fort Gregg. I have just had breakfast and the boys are alone. I will write as often as possible. hoping you will do the same. My kind regards to all.

I remain yours.
