Franklin Ashley to Celesta A. Ewing, 10 August 1865
Head-Quarters Post,
New orleans La
Aug (10) 1865.

            Dear Wife
as time presents it self I will write a short letter hoping it may safely reach you and find you well also of the rest of the family and also find you patiently waiting the coming of the 64 Regt which cannot be told at present but we are told that it will not be long we have notice that the 4 Corps will cease to be an organisation on the 25 day of August some think we will be discharged Gen Sheraden has orders to discharge all troops that are not kneaded in Texas that are detached to Texas but whether or not we will be the luckey ones I cannot tell but that is the wish of all

I understood that the troops are marching on to San Antonio 180 miles from Indianolia Texas or what is left of them the largest number of the / the privates have left in the 3rd Division and some out of the other Divisions well in fact I cannot blame them much but yet still I would not do it I would not disgrace my friends by doing so but some it is no disgrace if the government desires to keep me and I cannot geet out honorable I will serve my time out only a little over a year yet But I have no idea of remaining that long

Well Let we have not gone to texas yet and donot know how soon we will go one battery went last knight and the other will go to night the 6 Ohio Battery is musterd out they are in town yet or were yesterday

Well Let the chills are a close friend to us a large number of the of the boys are sick with it the weather is very warm but I hope it will soon be over and I think it will time passes very fast

Aug 11th 1865
Dear Let as time did not permit me to finish my letter I will do so now but I have very little to write but what we have is favorable I notice in the paper an order to muster out one third of the Army here under Sheraden it puts new life in the soldiers we hear of it most evry day but we hear so much we cannot believe half but this I think is a fact at least it is believed

I have not heard from the Corps for the last day or so

My health is good yet and am hopeful it will continue so it will not be long till the weather will be cooler and as a matter of cours it will be healthyer

I have not had but one letter from you since I came to this Hell deserted hole but my male has gone to the Brigade if there is anny but there is none unless from you for my corrispondence have ceased writing but it may / be they do not want to hear from me if so it is all right I will write no more letter excepting to you unless I receive one from them I am indifferent to much so for my own good I have only had one letter from home for the last 4 months
