Dear Sister
I was out to the hook last night and got a letter from you, and was glad to hear that you was well and hearty, and that you had good news for me, but it was almost to late for I have enlisted but have got my papers in my own hands I enlisted last Friday night under Samuel Berry Esq They cant oblige me to go untill I send in my papers. Father does not know that I have enlisted, but Father has almost given his consent for me to enlist. I had made up my mind to go if I had to run away. I dont know whether I shall send in my papers or not if I do I shall have to go, where or no as the Niger said. You said that / Arthur Chick said that he thought he could get me a situation in the Custom House, but there is no cirtinty about it any way, he could not get it untill the first of January and perhaps he could not then. and even if he should succeed it is a long time to January and I might earn 13 Dollars in that time if not more by goin to the wars. However see him and know the particulars about it and tell him to write to me and write the particulars how much he pays a green hand &c &c. and tell him to write before it is to late ever lastingly to late. if I dont have answer imeadeatly I shall go to the wars next week now cirtinly dont write anything to Farther about my enlisting.
