Dear Sister
I see that you will not write to me and I will write you again I wrote you a letter 5 weeks ago when I first came to Washington and have not got an answer yet perhaps you have not got it. but never mind I am here now and theres no two ways about it. we got here with out any trouble and we have had some pretty good times since we have been here. it has been wet and mudy for 10 days and they this wether lastes 6 weeks but I hope not. I guess you would laugh if you could could look / in upon us this morning but you cant. we are in a tent 6 ft long wide and 7 ft long 5 men in a tent 5 knapsacks & 5 canteens 5 Haversacks. 10 blankets 5 over coats one stove wood to burn in it & other things to numeous to mention what do you think of that we are 1½ miles from the city I have been down 5 or 6 times there is two Regts on the ground 3 Cos N.H. boys Geo. Scales from Barrington is in the first Co we can here them fight over the river some times. we can see the (Potomac) from here. we have not got our rifles yet & never shall get them. it is pretty sickly here but I am well. Some of the boys are / not very well but they are a little homesick I guess. want you supprised when you herd that I had enlisted I want you to write as soon as you get this and tell Miss Emma to write to. I would write to her this time but I haint got time I will next time. write all the news and send me a paper if you knew how we soldiers like to get letters you would write often
