to the steamboat landing. Did not get started till dark marched quick time got pretty warm. had to wait until midnight got a nap on a pile of rail road iron. got in to the boat & went to sleep.
Sun. 28 This morning we got started about 8 oclock it dont seem much like sunday 6 oclock still sailing have had a beautiful day passed some of the forts one I counted about 30 guns on the top of one saw along the river where the rebels had batteries last

Pleasant this morning sleep down in the hold last night rested well Arrival at Fortress Monroe 7.30 have just anchored stayed at Fortress until 9.45 & started for Norfolk saw the wreck of the merimac got to Norfolk about 11 stayed here 3 or 4 hours and started for Suffolk got to Suffolk towards night did not pitch our tents but lay on the ground had no supper.

graded our streets weather is very warm This morning I went over to the 135 Reg saw Capt Cornell & Justin Coy to night I went down and saw the mounted rifles boys. I dont like our fare very well.

To day Almeron came here had a good visit with him. He dont like it very well

Thurs. 2. Hot & pleasant again to day. Fifty of our Company went down and commenced a fort. I acted as Corporal of the relief did not have to shovel any

Wrote to Sam to day this morning a squad went off to work on the fort got excused but at noon another one was ordered out had to go this time Hear of skirmishing to day was ordered out to night about nine oclock marched out to the entrenchments have to lay on our muskets to night
 
                                                           
 
Sat 4. No attack last night remained at rifle pits until morn when I was detailed with 12 more of our Co. to go out on picket went about 2 miles west of here thousands of troops passed us going back in camp good many straglers.

Sat 11. 1½ oclock P.M. Has been raining and is going to snow pretty soon I think have got our things all packed ready to start I dont know where. Been running hard slacked up and we left Suffolk about 6 oclock commenced running as we started had to stay in the street till about 11 oclock rained all the time got pretty

Have been out and got me a dish of oysters had to pay 50 cents raining yet marched out to camp about 11 oclock through the rain set our tents on old platform it not seem much like sunday rains all the time

Got up this morning about 3 Oclock sat up with Johnny Doolittle wrote to George Pennell. Hd inspection of arms this forenoon. Was detailed for picket left camp about noon on picket we halted every one found some contraband goods a nice piece of steak &c.

Pleasant but cool to day. On guard to day Officers have all gone at Norfolk to spend New Years with Mrs Viele. Wrote to Tom to day. To night I put John Stiles in guard house quite an excitement in camp
To day 3000 niggers met on the Norfolk fair ground.
To night some of the boys were brought in camp by picket

This morning John Horn and myself went down to the draw bridge to see the boys and get some oysters It is a beautiful day Saw an oriole going down passed an old Georgia encampment Shot at a duck on the river. It is a beautiful place can see the steamers pass at the mouth of the river. The draw bridge is about ¾ of a mile in width

To day it is cloudy and looks like rain. Had knapsack inspection at 9 O'clock. Wrote Elmira Pennell this P.M.

Pleasant to day took the standard out of our tent had good drill to day PM.

Been around the fort and saw the prisoners. most of the negroes have left the fort saw one with a ball and chain on started for camp about noon rained in afternoon no dress parade to day

Had a hard storm last night to day cloudy and rained some P.M. growing cool. Shotwell Powell came up to our tent and made us a visit to night. 60 men went out reconnoitering last night. No letter

Got a letter from Mate and a paper from Miss Baker Went up to the band tent and had sing
