A Sabbath well spent
Brings a well of content
And health for the toils of tomorrow
But a Sabbath profaned
What so ere may be gained
Is a certain forerunner of sorrow

Lives there a man with soul so dead,
Who never to himself hath said,
This is my own, my native land,
Whose heart hath ne'er within him burned,
As home his footsteps he hath turned.
From wandering on a foreign strand?
If such there breath, go mark him well,
For him no minstrel raptures swell.
High though his titles, proud his name,
Boundless his wealth, as wish can claim,
Despite those titles, power and pelf,
The wretch concentered all in self,
Living shall forfeit all renown
And doubly dying shall go down
To the vile dust from whence sprung
Unwept, unhonored and unsung

To plain, alas, my doom is spoken,
Nor canst thou veil the sad truth o'er;
Thy heart is changed, thy vow is broken,
Thou lov'st no more—thou lov'st no more.
Who would seek or prize
Delights that end in aching
Who would trust to ties
That every hour are breaking
Better for to be
In utter darkness lying
Than to be bless'd with light & see
That light forever flying
