Brother Sam
I recd your last yesterday. glad to hear from home. We are having a terrible storm here to day. It commenced raining last night about 9 Oclock turned to snow before morning but is raining again now comes from the northeast We are having good deal of rainy weather, tuesday and Wed. it rained all of the time 48 hours without stopping
Yesterday was pleasant I went down to the city thought I would go over to Fort Norfolk to see Adams, but the tug was not running so had to come back The 1st Lieut. of his company / has resigned and if the promotions go on in regular order he will come in 2nd Lieut. but I hear that it stands between him and the 3rd Sergt I dont how I it will come out
This week his company is coming back to camp & Company H is going to take their place at the Fort. Viele has not left Norfolk yet I dont know whether he will go or not. King is here too
I guess that if it storms at home as it does here you do not go to church to day it rains like a thunder shower. you dont know how comfortable these tents are they cant a bit of rain get through them I dont care how hard it rains. But a pretty good stream runs in under the door.
Col Johnson thinks if we are victorious at Vicksburg & Port Hudson / it will decide the conflict. I believe it will too. If I was as some are that work by the month and do not have any home I should just as soon be in the army as not, but we have had easier times than most soldiers. I never was so fat I have most out grown my shirts they go on pretty tight I weigh 195 pounds plump when I get to 200 I am going to dieting.
I guess when the warm weather comes it will pull off some of it. Dr. Simmons has resigned and will probably go home some time this week. If he is out to Richmond I should not wonder if he came to see you & Mother told me he would
You can see him at Canandaigua when you get home.
I expect he was resigned obliged to resign the Col was down on him. I understand that we are going to have a Seneca Falls M.D. now at the head. Dr. Carpenter is acting now. I am sorry Dr Simmons is going to leave he is the best friend I have got here am glad I was sick while he was here. He says he dont believe I will be sick again very soon We will have no mail to day I guess it storms so wind blows. How much is wheat worth now
But I must stop tell Willie I could not read all of his letter
Good bye
Your Brother
