Charles E. Reed to Samuel P. Reed, 25 August 1863
Norfolk Aug. 25th 1863
Tues. Morn.
Brother Sam.
I recd your letter last night money all right. You need not send me any more until I send for it. I have got enough for the present. You may send the box as soon as you can after you get this. Direct—C. E. Reed, Provost Guard Norfolk. leave of Prov. Sergt. I will warrant that to reach me if it comes to Norfolk at all. I see all the express boxes that come as I have to be down to the boat when she lands The weather is a little cooler but it is warm enough now
Mother may put a small pillow in the box if she is a mind to covered with calico. I dont know about my money. I never have set any figures down. The first bounty I got, I thought I put some more money with it and let Aunt Betsey have I believe she took up the note soon after. I have forgotten about it I guess you know more about it than I do The second bounty I think I let you have $40 when you came to Geneva. The rest is all right I believe. I would not let Joe have any more money you will have a good time getting what he has got. You have seen an account of that raid destroying Lawrence / I wonder if Joe suffered much by it.
Capt & Lieut Brown are both getting better. Helen Pitts thinks of going home in a few weeks. she wants me to get a furlough and go at the same time. But I guess it is not possible. I believe the Capt is going to try and get a furlough next week if he is able to go. Business is pretty lively here now a good many goods coming in I have got no news to write how does the corn look now. I am well have got a slight cold though I saw Jack Webb yesterday their reg. has gone to Yorktown so Almeron is there now
I hope you will have good luck settling the Phipps affairs and not have to pay more than what is right. Do you continue to like your new horse how are her eyes do they get any worse. I expect Fort Sumpter is gone up before this and like enough, Charleston to. Some think that will close the war but I dont. I have men tell me that we would all be home by Christmas but I dont believe it yet
Send me Fathers & Mothers photographs.
Love to all
Your Brother
C. E. Reed
