[blue pencil: Chattanooga news]
Yorktown Va Nov 27th
Brother Sam
I recd your letter to night glad to hear from you. What glorious news there is in the papers to night. We got it by telegraph last night. I was on guard. The news was spread through Yorktown just as fast as one of the General's aid's could run his horse. He came past the guard house and ordered the guard to fall in and give three cheers for the great victory which had been won at Chattanooga You had better believe that the colored troops outside of the Fort gave some lusty / cheers. But the 148th was not far behind They gave three times three It was almost as good as a furlough to me, for I felt considerable nearer home I only hope that Gen Grant will succeed in getting the whole of them He is the best man we have got or at any rate he is the luckiest. I suppose there were great rejoicings north. A National salute was fired in the Fort also one on the gunboat
We are having fine weather rather cool nights. Were paid off yesterday I guess I shall not send my money this time I dont care how soon my box comes now / I shall look for it next week. Lieut Adams is expecting to go home on furlough soon. He has been unwell every since we have at Yorktown I hope you will see him. He can tell you all company matters We get daily papers the same as at Norfolk. Old Point Comfort and Fort Monroe are the same. Use my money as you are mind too I cant get any photographs here but I will try & send Caroline my ambrotype in my next letter if I can get one to suit me. I never enjoyed better health than I do now. Surely I / have reason to be thankful for the many blessings I have enjoyed since I have been in the army I guess I will close and and crawl in soon as last night I did not rest much The mail leaves at 7 in the morning now
Good Night
Your Brother
