Yorktown Va Feb 27th /64

Dear Sister
This morning I came off from guard and found my box all right. I have seen no boxes come to the army that are packed any better than those you have had the superintendence of. Every thing in good order. Tomorrow I shall dine on turkey &c. I shall take Lieut Adams some and a piece of pie This week has been pleasant except the wind. The dust flies as bad as snow at home and considerably worse for the eyes Mort Sleight is here now He leaves pretty soon has got to pilot one of the nigger regiment to Warrick C.H. / It is now between 9 and 10 The Regt starts as soon as the moon rises.

Your letter came to night need not send me any more postage stamps or money Tell Sam, experience is a good school but a dear one. I can sympathize with Mother on the loss of the hams. I found Willies letter glad to hear from him I have got no news to write nothing to make a letter of. I got my Post last night That fellow who informed the rebs of our raid was a member of the Mt Rifles He was under sentence of death for shooting the provost Marshall of Wm'sburg. I saw a piece / in the Post giving the reasons for the failure of the expedition. There were two thousand Cavalry in all. I send you a Yorktown paper giving the best account of the expedition I have seen. If you are a mind to you can send to Nat after you get done with it. The boys have all turned in and I shall fix to as soon as Mort takes his leave. Every thing looks as if the war would end sometime. I believe Grant will fix them. There is a much talk about our going back to Norfolk. I suppose we were ordered back but Gen Wistar got it countermanded I recd your letter in due / season containing a dollar I suppose Lina has gone as you say nothing about her. Good night—

Love to all
Your Aff'ct Brother
