Charles E. Reed to Samuel P. Reed, 1 April 1864
[blue pencil right margin: Gen Grant]
Yorktown Va. Apr 1st 1864
Brother Sam
I arrived to camp this afternoon all right. The boys were very glad to see me, at least they acted as if they were. I was lucky in being at Fort Monroe to day as saw Gen Grant. Had first rate view of him. Saw him two or three times. He is rather an ordinary looking man. Does not put on much style. His stuff was not with him and I guess no one knew he was coming. He walked up to the Fort, his little boy with him. It was said Gens McDowell & Smith were with him. I saw / them. One was dressed in citizens clothes Afterwards I saw Gen Butler with Grant. Butler is the smartest looking. I did not get to Baltimore till noon Above Harrisburg a large rock fell on the track which took 4 or 5 hours to remove. At Wayland a soldier was run over. He was trying to get on the cars. It must have killed him as it ran over his thighs It is raining to night The 22ond they had a big snow storm here The boys say it was the worse night they have had since they have been / in the service
To morrow I go on guard Nothing new here.
The boys think we will stay here all summer
Love to All
Your Brother
