Charles E. Reed to Caroline A. Reed, 23 April 1864
Camp Near Williamsburg
Apr 23rd 1864. 1 oclock P.M.

Dear Sister
I have just read your letter, glad hear from you. You see we have moved I wrote Sam yesterday that we were going I didn't know where, but we have hauled up here, going up the Peninsula in earnest this time A large force will be along I dont know how many They have been coming hundreds a day
Gen Smith in command

It is warm and pleasant to day. We have got a Sibley tent up I am laying on the ground coat off I was afraid I should / not hear from you again very soon. Perhaps this will be the last time you will hear from me in a good while. You need not worry about me if I come through all right I will, if not, you need not trouble until you hear from me. I dont dread the campaign at all.

I got back all right in time, no trouble. I dont know where any of the soldiers were going I saw on the road I saw Gen Grant at Fort Monroe

We are brigaded with the 2ond N.H. 12th N.H. 11th Conn. Gen Wistar our brigadier

I haven't much to write You need not expect to hear from me again unless we stay here some time I think we may stay here a week or more till the forces are organized

Hoff is sick and left behind I left my ink behind so you will have to read pencil marks
Love to all

Your Affect. Brother
