Charles E. Reed to Unknown, undated
9 O'clock A.M. I have not heard from Mrs Brinley since last winter. I believe I did not answer her last letter. Her cousin died in prison I expect Mr Lee takes quite a shine to Louisa He had a her picture last year when I saw him at Cold Harbor. He appeared to be a fine fellow I suppose Almeron will soon be home if not already there. You know that there is an order mustering out all cavalry men whose time of service is out before the 1st of October
I rather guess we will get out before Sept still may have to stay. It wont be long any way If I keep well I had dont care. Some of the men who are in hospitals are being discharged Three officers of the Regt have resigned since we have been on this ground. Should not be surprised if more went. I shall stay as long as the regiment does if nothing happens My business papers are all straight now / and I guess I can keep them so. Yesterday was the first sunday we have had nothing to do. The Chaplain preached at 4 oclock in the afternoon Send me the Times that has the report of the sheep show in. I have not been to the city since I came up here. Sam might if he preferred send me a check. I guess I could get it cashed at the National Bank in Richmond
I wish I might get home by the 4th July. Strawberries are selling at 20 cents per quart I got all I wanted to eat the other day for 10 cents. If we stay here we will have plenty of berries The fields are full of blackberries & huckleberries I shall write again in three or four days when Berry starts for home. Do you have any flies yet. They are awful thick here. Tell Tom and Elmira to write me, for they owe me a letter I have got nothing to do to day, hardly know how to pass the time away. Have written all I can think of. Write often as you can get time
Tell Willie to write me a letter. Give my respects to John & Jim—Your
