Near Richmond Va. May 9th 1865

            Dear Sister
Your letter directed to the hospital reached me this morning. I was very glad to hear from home. I see you are rather expecting me home. I suppose I could have had a leave from the hospital, but I preferred to come back to the Regiment. I had command of the Co from the 1st of Apr. on the campaign and was accountable for all the company property guns knapsacks tents &c. One has to be careful and have his returns all right or his pay is stopped. I am coming out all right.

The 2d and 5th Corps passed through here enroute for Washington last Saturday To morrow the 14th A.C. of Shermans army passes through. We have to go down to the city and receive them. I see by the papers that the Army of the James is to stay in Virginia. Perhaps we will not get discharged till our time is out. If they let us stay here I dont care as we have such a fine place, duty light

I am getting along finely, had one pull back since I have been back. One of the boys steeped me some blackberry root. It helped me right away. Living pretty well now had shad, potatoe (mashed) &c for breakfast It cost me about (5) dollars a week for my board now. It is very pleasant. had a fine shower this morning it has cleared off finely. I guess when Willie gets the money I sent him he will think I have not forgotten him. Sam had better send me some money occasionally so I shall not get out. Most Noon. Judge Folger from Geneva has been here. The Regt was formed in hollow square and he made us a nice little speech.

Afterwards I had the pleasure of an introduction. He inquired where I was from and wanted to know if I belonged to that old family of Reeds. Col Murray is going to take him out to the Fair Oaks battle ground this afternoon. I wish you could see the roses in bloom here. I have a nice bouquet on my stand sending its perfume around. The Judge spoke of the reception we would receive in Geneva when we returned I hope you & Sam will be there if possible. Sam can come anyway. My love to Willie and all

I shall look for another letter in about two days as this one has been some time coming, going the Hospital first.
