Brother Sam
It is a beautiful morning, warm and pleasant. Have had fine weather since I have been here I am about well again, expect to go to the regiment soon, as I think I can stand it and have no pull backs. I see there is some advantage in being an officer if you have to go the hospital. The care is first rate and you can have most any thing you wish to eat Expenses are $1.50 per day. Rather expensive. that does not make much difference as long as you do well. I bought me a pair of light boots here the other day Paid $8.00 for them. I thought I would / shoes but could not find any that suited me. I was obliged to get me a pair of fine boots or shoes for dress occasions such as parades reviews &c.

I want to look as well and dress as well as any of the officers and meant to.

What a pity about Sherman making such a mistake in allowing Johnson such terms I hope Grant will get there in time to change the programme Sherman must have been drunk or crazy. A nigger in the fence somewhere. What do you think of President Johnson. Every one here seem to have much more confidence in him than they did before Lincoln was assassinated.

We heard of the assassination / before we left Appomattox C.H. Of course every one felt very badly, all wondering what we were to do now. No one then seemed to have much confidence in Andrew Johnson.

I expect the Reg is near Richmond. Some seem to think that we may be discharged before our time is up. I do not anticipate any such good luck. The time will soon pass off any way I do not expect to see any more fighting. I guess you had better direct my letters to the Reg. as I will be there by the time they reach here.

I dont know whether you can read this or not.

Love to all—
Your Affc't Brother
Charles
