Charles E. Reed to Samuel P. Reed, 29 March 1865
Camp 148th N.Y.Vols
Near Weldon R.R. Va Mar. 29th /65
Brother Sam
The Spring campaign has fairly opened now Monday afternoon we broke camp about 9½ O'clock in the evening we commenced our march. Marched nearly all night. Stopped once about two hours so we got a little sleep. Yesterday we marched all day stopped about three miles from here. I dont know exactly where we are but are pretty near the left of our lines. The march was pretty hard my feet got some sore, but the boys with their knapsacks were about used / up. We have relieved troops here and they started on towards the left this morning. Expect to hear from them soon. Every one seems to think we are able now to handle the Rebels I wish you could have been along with us and seen what a sight of troops there are You can hardly conceive of them till you have seen them. We came past the 126th Regt I just saw Louis Ball to speak with him and that was all as we were moving all the time. I am in command of Co "G" at present. I see there is some difference in between carrying knapsack and gun &c and carrying a sword and overcoat / the rest of my baggage is carried in the wagons. Expect to get a letter from home when the mail comes Grant's Military Rail Road is right in sight of camp We came past the 188th Regts camp but I did not think there was any one there I knew till after we had passed it. I guess we will not stay here long. The talk here is that the troops who left here are going to North Carolina to tuck Johnson and Bragg in the rear. I heard this morning that Sherman was here yesterday but dont believe it. 2 Div of Shermans Cavalry are here or we passed them yesterday, three or four miles on the right. I expect they go with the force which has started to day. We have got first rate quarters here. I found shelter tents enough to cover the roof with. So we are all settled in side of two hours after our arrival. I wish we could stay here all summer. Lee did not make much last saturday in his movement. While he had his troops massed near Petersburg, our troops made an advance here and took one line of their works
I pretty well tired out to day after our march but feel well. Enclosed is picture for Caroline to keep for me in her album
