Charles E. Reed to Samuel P. Reed, 22 March 1865
Camp 148th N.Y.Vols.
Wed. Morn. Mar. 22d 1865
Brother Sam
I returned from Norfolk last night, found a letter from you and one from Horace Gilbert. This morning I received one from Nat—He says I done just as any other sensible man would do in mustering for three years. Yesterday morning the Regt broke camp and started in heavy marching order and four days rations. Only got two or three miles and were ordered back. I was very glad to find them here last night. I have got every thing now I want and got between $80 & $90 left. Last night rained but this morning is pleasant wind / blowing so the ground will be dried out again soon. I hope you will not be drafted again for I know you will not like soldiering at all. besides you cannot leave home if you are you must get a substitute if possible. I got my photograph for Caroline. They are not very good. I saw Sergt Wint at For Monroe. His leg is not well yet. Pieces of bone are working out all the time I expect we will be on the move soon. I cant think of any thing to write so will close. The boys were paid Monday
