Charles E. Reed to Caroline A. Reed, 20 February 1865
[blue pencil: Paul]
Camp 148th N.Y.Vols.
Monday Morn. Feb 20th 1865

            Dear Sister
I received your letter yesterday together with one from Capt. Griswold. Capt wrote me a first rate letter. I did not think Capt did hardly fair with me about that Orderly business but am now disposed to think he done the best could. I feel sorry for him He lost the use of his left arm the bone being out from the shoulder nearly to the elbow joint. The wound has healed but his health is very poor so that he is not able to do any thing. As soon as he is able he is going in the county clerks office. He wants me to help him settle his business with the Gov.

It is a beautiful morning froze a little last night. Yesterday was pleasant. had Brigade review left camp about 8 o'clock and got back about 1 O'clock. I was pretty tired. Hope it will be the last time I shall have to carry a knapsack. I have not mustered yet The papers have not got around yet look for them every day I shall muster in Co. H. The Col says I shall be assigned to Co G as we have no officer present with the company. A D Paul received a commission as 2d Lieut the same time mine came. He expects to muster in "G" in place of Murray I hope he will. he wants to come and I would like to have him We would make a good team He is a good business man I can beat him on drilling / and tactics. Paul has been hospital Steward. Before he enlisted he succeeded Fitch Cheney in the drug store next the Webster House.

Paper has just come says Sherman has captured Branchville after three days hard fighting Beauregard reported killed. Guess he will come to life again in the next paper.

Mr Bartholomew from Naples stayed here Sat. night. He came to see his son who belongs this Co. and is sick. He is a real sharp agreeable old man. Had a good visit with him. He did not like the way soldiers were treated on the boats. He said they were stowed in as thick as they could be and the boat was dirtier than his hog pen. I guess after he / had been here a spell he would not notice such things.

I dont think Mr Day done right talking to Belle Hamilton. If he is not careful he will get up a row in the church. Aunt Betsey Pennell will not stand it. Tell Tom to write me a letter and all the news.

The Colonel thinks I am all right. I guess I hit the nail on the head when I came back to the Company last fall. My box was all right
Love to Willie and all the rest

Your Affc't Bro.
Charles
