Dear Brother
I received your letter yesterday glad to hear from home. I have not had much faith in the peace rumors but still have hoped that they would amount to something for I am tired of war. I think this summer will about fix them. I do not think you would be quite so particular about the way peace was brought about after about one good fight, like Cold Harbor for instance that is if you were liable to go into another one just as bad again.
It is a beautiful morning / froze hard last night. The frost has not been out of the ground for three weeks now Most of the time been been pleasant. After all our marching orders we are still here no special signs of moving right away
I am well again and have been so for two weeks.
Dont think of my coming home for there is no possible chance of my getting a furlough now.
I got a Democrat and Times last night and a Democrat the night before.
Mary Jane Ashley must have died quite suddenly. I had only heard in Caroline's last letter that she was sick I have not a bit of news and I dont know / what to make a letter of Lieut Murray is appointed Capt of Co "G" by Gov Fenton. We do not expect him back to the company. He is at present on Gen Getty's Staff
I believe I should try and keep John another season if I could. After I get home we can get along alone if we cant get any to work. I shall soon be home now if I am as fortunate through this campaign as I was last.
The bugle has just sounded the call for guard mounting so I shall have to see my men out.
I have the clothing return Rolls for January to make out to day so will close
Your Affect. Bro
