Dear Sister
We are having real winter weather. The sun shines but does not thaw any Sat. was the coldest day we have had this winter. The mails come very irregularly on account of the boats being frozen in I have not see a paper later than last mondays. I recd your letter last thursday No mail yet to day
I suppose you have seen an account of the rebel gunboats starting to come down the river. If they had come down I do not know what would have become of us / The rebels had a Div massed a little ways from here ready to pitch in when the gun boats came along There was nothing to hinder them from coming right along but their cowardice
Tuesday I went over to the Mt Rifles. Almeron's barrel had come. Had a good dinner sausage &c. My box has not got along yet. I hear that there is a great deal of express at Bermuda Almeron & all the boys are well. Had a good time I am well again feel first rate. Did you ever see such poor paper as this I just got it at the sutler's Only bought ten cents worth to last till my box comes
What do you think of Gen Butler now Gen Terry has taken Wilmington
Do you want to take a girl ten years old or do you know of any who does. James Briggs a tent mate from Naples has a niece who has lived with his mother till she died lately They want to find a place for her. It is a good family. If you know of any one write and I will tell him
I hope my box will soon come for I am blessed with an excellent appetite
Wilbur of the Mt Rifles said Mr Hamilton talked of coming down here. I should think Mr Day could come with him. / I shall have to hurry and finish this for it is most time for the mail to go out. Every thing runs smoothly in the company I expect to hear of Toms being married every letter now
Give my respects to John Tell him I expect to be home to husk corn with this fall
Love to All
Yours Affctly
Charles
