            Brother Samuel
I recd your letter yesterday glad to hear from home. The diary came Saturday I dont like the shape of it very well. I wanted one so I could put an envelope in it. That is the only way I can carry pepper on a campaign. It will do though. My box has not arrived. I am not feeling first rate. Have the diarrhea some. Half of the regiment have got it. I believe it is caused by the water. Pleasant weather now. It freezes some nights but thaws out during the day. Have you received / the warrant I sent home You do not say any thing about it. What do you think of Gen. Butlers removal It gives general satisfaction here. His farewell address is good. Do you have any faith in these peace movements I wish they might amount to something but doubt it I have thought all along that it was foolish for the supervisors to pay such large bounties. Men that are in the army have to pay to let others stay at home who are just as able to come

I would never give a cent voluntarily to hire recruits Let each one stand the draft If a man is in the army a year and gets through / he will never be sorry and if he dies he could never die in a better cause. I hope we will not have quite as much hard fighting next summer as we had last hardly think will, if we only have a force large enough I don't know how you will get along with out some help When I get home we can get along pretty well. If I am as tough as I am here. I think my box will get along about wednesday.

Has Spencer Short a substitute. I believe he wanted one pretty badly

It is going to be a beautiful day. Write often

Love to all

Your Brother
Charles
