Camp 148th N.Y.V. Va
New Years 1865
Dear Sister
I have just got back from an evening meeting. One of the agents preached, done very well. It is only about 8 Oclock so I thought I would commence a letter from home. I received yours this morning. Am glad Willie had a chance to see the Christmas tree. I must tell you about my New Years present I got in yesterday's mail. A beautiful silk handkerchief from Dr and Mrs Paul. It is the nicest one ever saw, large I should it crimson all one color. Last week it rained most every day and it was very muddy. Last night it froze up. To day has / pleasant. Thawed some in the sun. Last week I had plenty of work to do in making out the muster rolls I guess I worked on them three days. They take an awful sight of writing and I took more pains with them than I do writing letters I think they will compare favorably with those made out by 'shoulder straps'
I wish Mr Day and Sam would come down here I guess they would have no trouble. They would want recommendations from Provost Marshall Remer and a few leading men, as Haldreth U.S. Marshall &c.
Monday Morning. it is cold and pleasant, froze hard last night. I dont think Wheeler was hardly fair in his assessments. Sam had better blow a little and see / if he can not get ours down or theirs up. I sent my warrant home last tuesday.
My Post came yesterday and I got a daily besides. Have got nothing to do to day. Sent a Harpers Magazine to day. The picture of Gen'l Grant is very natural.
This morning I had biscuit for breakfast. the cook baked them for me. I got the flour at the commissaries
I suppose my box will be about three weeks on the road
I cant think of any thing to write so guess I will quit
Love to all
Yours Affectionately
Charles
