Camp of 148th N.Y.V.
Mon. Eve. Dec. 26th 1864
Brother Sam
What glorious news we are having. To night the Col. got us (the Reg) out in line and read the dispatch concerning the capture of Savannah. It seems almost to good to be true. We gave three rousing cheers for the victory three for General Sherman. Then the Col proposed three more for the time when that army should meet this and give the finishing blow to the / rebellion. Of course we gave three cheers for the Col. It rained last night and has thawed up and it so muddy. You will find my Sergt's warrant here I saw another one made out for me as 1st Sergt and will get it as soon as we get official notice of Housels death
I almost begin to think the confederacy will fall to pieces before the 1st of March. I dont know how they can be so blind as not to see their certain / doom. expect to hear every day that Davis and his Congress have slid I guess they will fail to get out of Wilmington And Thomas to how he has walloped Hood
I expect we shall have one more set to here but we are going to clean them next time. I feel full of fight to night.
Tell Willie I got his candy had not looked to see what was in the paper when I mailed my letter yesterday What about the draft
I dont think I should mind much about being drafted for a year. At any rate I would not give four cents for a sub. But you never could stand it / I rather pride myself on being able to stand as much marching or hardship of any kind as the next one
What a pile of cotton Sherman captured.
I shall expect to hear my box has started before long
Love to all
Your Aff'ct Bro.
Charles
