Charles E. Reed to Caroline A. Reed, 18 December 1864
Camp of 148th N.Y.Vols.
Dec. 18th 1864
Dear Sister
I recd a letter from you this morning glad to hear from home. It is cloudy this morning has sprinkled some. Weather warm.
I am comfortably situated in my new house. Have got a table a good fire place and a pleasant fire in it now We build our fireplaces out of mud. Virginia soil is peculiarly adapted to the use If we can only stay here all winter I shall be satisfied Have considerable work to do. Have got three muster rolls to make out to send to N.Y. State. Have one done / and should be to work on the others if I had the blanks Have no trouble with business
Everything is quiet along our front. Friday night there was considerable firing on Butler's old front between the rivers
The C. Commission have a tent close by have meetings every night. There is preaching there this afternoon at two Oclock. Guess I shall attend I heard a day or two ago that Capt. Griswold had got his discharge. He has been reported absent without leave a long time. We have no commissioned Officers in our company present. I have the whole to do. I hope we will have another Capt again now /
Feel first rate. The news is first rate about Sherman My Post came this morning. I can get Independents at the Chris. Com. and other religious papers You can do as you like about sending the turkey though I suppose the box will be started by the time you get this. I guess it would spoil before it reached here as it would take about three weeks for it to come And it might the other things taste.
I am glad Albert is getting around again.
Love to All
Your Affct. Brother
Charles
