Bro. Sam.
I recd a letter from you last sunday. I wrote home last Sat that I had received the box. My boots go finely. They came just the right time for it commenced raining last friday night and it has rained most all the while till this morning. It is still cloudy This morning a request went into Div.Hd.Qrs. to return me to my Regt I think it is best for me to go back. they need me. I do not expect quite as easy times as I have here.

The company has two sergeants on detail besides me. They had / rather be reduced to the rank than come back. It looks to mean and dishonorable to me and I am going back. I dont see any thing to hinder me from being Orderly. Still I cant tell. I have all the company that want me to return, and will work for me.

I recd an Independent with your letter. have read all the sermons The next letter you write direct to the Regt. 1st Brig 2 Div 18 A.C. If I should not go back I can get it. The roads are very muddy I guess the rain has stopped active operations for some time

Write often
Affectionately
Charles—

Afternoon I have got the order ordering me back to the Regt and shall return to it tomorrow morning
