Charles E. Reed to Samuel P. Reed, 22 October 1864
Camp of 2d Division Sharp Shooters
Near Chapin's Farm Va
Saturday Morn. Oct. 22d 1864
Brother Samuel
My gun came last night all right. I like it first. I suppose it came at Fort Monroe about the time we started across the James and was detained there till things were settled a little. Yesterday I voted and sent it to you. The Reg't has been at for two days now Some of the companies go strong for little Mac. I am glad to say that out of 24 votes cast in Co "G" 22 were for Abraham Lincoln I believe there are a few more McClellan men to vote. Our officers from the Col down are most a unit for Lincoln. They cant swallow the Chicago Platform. This morning there is quite an artillery duel going on The first we have had. You can hear the shells whizzing every minute nearby. None come near us though. I wrote for my boots in my last letter if you have not sent them put my vest in the box to I need it very much. I forgot to write in my last about it. If you have sent the box roll the vest up and send it by mail. I hope the boots will come through quick for one of my old shoes gave out yesterday on one side and I dont want to get a new / pair this fall. Day before yesterday Oscar Sisson from Canandaigua call on me. Horace (his brother) was with If you see him you can find out how we get along here. The last letter from I recd one week ago to day. Have not got the mail yet this morning. there may be one for me in the mail I have just been over after the mail, found one for me from Caroline. I have recd all of your letters lately. $.50 in the letter this morning. Think I have recd all the tomatoes you have sent. They are first rate
I hope Sam has not been to Canandaigua to see about the gun. I have written all along that I thought it would be along. Perhaps he has not been to see about it
It is quite cold this morning has rained a little guess it wont any more though. Night before last a salute was fired with shotted guns along our front in honor of another victory by Sheridan. I sent you a Richmond paper last night I went down to the James the other day, got a peep at Fort Darling through the trees. Saw one of the Rebel rams. The Rebels have got batteries stuck in pretty thick on the other side of the river. My Love to Willie & all the rest
Your Affc't Bro
