Charles E. Reed to Caroline A. Reed, 21 October 1864
Camp Sharp Shooters
Near Chapins Farm Va
Wed Morn Oct 21st

Dear Sister
I recd your letter this morning also one from Hoff. He is in Phil hospital yet, had been home on a furlough. A good share of the 18th Corps are on the move this morning where they are going to I cant tell. We have had no marching orders yet, but expect them every minute. It is going to be quite warm to day. The 148th are on the road.

There has been a report that we were going to N. Carolina I dont know any thing about it, but think we will not get / away as far as that I wish we were going there any where to get out of this army. I hope you have sent my boots for I shall need them by the time they reach me. My Post has come regularly so far on this year. I think you had not better send much provision with the boots but wait till you send the shirts. I suppose it will cost more to send two boxes than one. But if I can get along without the shirts till we get in winter quarters it will be better. One of our boys just came just now. He says that the cooks are cooking up 3 days rations / and a Lieut told him the River was full of transports, two ocean going steamers among them. I hope we are going south. We cant get in a worse place to fight If we go there I suppose it is with the expectation of taking Wilmington I guess we could give it a hard one.

I must close

Love to all
Your Affec't Bro
