Charles E. Reed to Samuel P. Reed, 18 October 1864
Camp of Sharp Shooters
Chapin's Farm Va Oct 18th 1864

            Brother Samuel
I recd a letter from you last Sat should have written and answered it before but I wrote twice last week. We are having pleasant weather, nights rather cool. Every thing quiet along the lines. I expect they are waiting for the canal to be finished. I heard a few days ago that it would be done in 16 days. A week ago to day I gave the Chaplain $50.00 to express home for me. Enclosed you will find the receipt. I wrote in my last I recd the Evening Post. Have had two come this month, probably receive another this week. As long as the Reg is near us it does not make any difference whether my letters are directed the Co & Reg as they used to / be or whether they are directed Sharp Shooters. I get them just as well either way. There have no express boxes come at Hd. Qrs. lately so my gun has not come. Still I do not feel concerned about it for I think it is at Bermuda.

I begin to need my boots pretty badly or by the time they get here. Could you not send them and leave the shirts out until we get settled for I dont want them to carry around. I think you might put them in a small box and direct it as you do my letters, the 2d Division Sharp Shooters 18 A.C. Mother can fill the legs up, put in a pound or two of butter not much stuff I would have to carry. Keep that to send with the shirts. Send a pair of socks and some paper & envelopes. Col. Guion has resigned & left for home yesterday. He has been the service ever since the war commenced. I suppose Lt. Col. Murray will succeed him He is quite as good a man in a fight stands right up to the rack, and a better figurer / If there is any good chance to get in a good place, he isn't afraid to talk and get his Reg't there if possible. You might mark the box Care of Capt John Cooley. I recd a Democrat with some tomatoes this morning. I cant think of any more to write. I suppose my name is registered. I wish you would send me an envelope such as we are required to have in order to vote, also the papers. I dont know but they have them at Reg'al Hd. Qrs. but I have not seen / any thing of them. I guess they would not get around though as it is only three weeks now.

Love to all
