Wed Morn Oct 12th 1864—
Dear Sister
I recd your letter written Oct 5th this morning. Though I wrote yesterday I write again to day for fear that one may not reach you. I sent ($50.00) Fifty Dollars home yesterday by express directed to Livonia Station.
Now about the letters I have received from home. I got yours written Sept 20th Sams written the 24th yours written of Oct 1st and this morning yours of Oct 5th. I recd the suspenders also the tomatoes except those you write about in this last letter which I guess / will be along in a day or two Sam's letter he wrote from Can. about the gun I have never recd. Sunday night I recd the first Post in the last subscription. It is not necessary to change the direction. I shall get just as well as long as the Regiment stays in the Division. The 148th is now in the 1st Brig of the 2d Div. I recd the suspenders you sent me.
You need not worry about the gun for others have them just as long on the road. I understand that that there are a good many boxes for the 18th A.C. at Bermuda Hundred As there has been but one lot brought up in about 3 weeks I have no doubt but mine is there. The Gov. teams / are very busy now. I think perhaps it will be along before many days. Will write as soon as it comes.
Let Willie ride all he wants to. it will do him good. dont keep him a baby as long as you did me. I wrote you that Grant & Butler rode past the other day. Admiral Farragut was along I did not notice him as I knew nothing about his being present.
Every thing is quiet along the lines. Rebel deserters come in every night. I think there will be a move before long somewhere. It may be here If the Rebels dont get out of Richmond pretty soon I guess they will be obliged to.
Yesterday a dispatch came from Sheridan that he had / again whipped Early and driven him 26 miles farther. Cheering went along the lines. There is no firing between pickets here Quite often squads from each side get together exchange newspapers and talk over matters The deserters who come in seem quite discouraged One Rebel Major came in I hope you will write often for a letter from home does me more good than any thing else. Write any thing
