Charles E. Reed to Samuel P. Reed, 11 October 1864
Chapins Farm Va Oct 11th 1864

Dear Brother
We were paid yesterday and I have just expressed ($50) Fifty dollars to you directed to Livonia Station I thought it would be better than to risk it by mail. It will probably arrive there before you receive this. My gun has not come yet. I think it is at Bermuda Hundred. I have heard that there quite a good many boxes there for the 18th Corps. Every thing is quiet here last Sat I recv'd a letter from Caroline containing one dollar. Genl's Grant Butler Meade rode past here yesterday It was the first time I have seen Gen Meade. I am well with the exception of a hard cold. Have two day cold weather and two frosts To day is warmer

We are now about ¾ of a mile in the rear of the Fort we captured near 2d Div Hd Qrs. Our camp is not moved yet but expect it in a few days It has been rather cool sleeping on the ground, with not much of any thing over you When we get so cold we cant sleep we get up and warm keep a fire burning all night. The Rebels are deserting fast. / 12 came in last night in front of our Brig. The 148th is in the 1st Brig of the 2d Div now

I have no news. Sunday I was away from the company. the boys said that two citizens came along and enquired for me I cannot imagine who they were. Should like to have seen them. Charley Risden gets $45 per month now and next month his pay is increased to $75. I think he has improved a great deal The Chaplain takes our money to Fort Monroe to morrow I supposed it will be expressed from there

Tell Willie Uncle Sam claims my old gun so I guess he will have to do without it

Write soon

Your Bro
