            Dear Sister
It is a week ago thursday since I heard from home I have looked for a letter for some time. I hardly know when I shall get one now as the 148th has moved from here and my letters still come there. The regt moved this week across the Appomattox They are near the City Point Railroad, about 1½ miles from City Point. I suppose they are near the place where the Rebels captured our cattle. The 2d Brig. are there, Division Hd. Qrs. have not moved and I guess they will not. We will remain near them. Have nothing to do only draw the rations

I expected a letter from home more on account of my gun which I suppose is on the way. I recd two papers last night one with pills and the other with tomatoes. We have had most cheering news from Sheridan this week. Last night a dispatch came from Sheridan to Grant. We have just had it read to the company. He defeated the Rebels 11 miles from Woodstock capturing 16 pieces of Artillery You should have heard the salute fired this morning at 8 Oclock with shotted guns the whole length of the line from the James to the other side of Petersburg. It was one continual roar and must have waked the Johnies up some They did answer some down on the right. One battery of 4 guns / about 20 rods from us fired 40 rounds.

It is most noon and is raining quite hard now. weather warm I am enjoying the best of health—weigh 167 which is considerable more than I did 2 months ago. I hope you will make my shirts to send when my boots come. One of my shirts has given out and I have nothing to mend it with. I hear that there is a prospect of the Regt getting pay next week. I dont know whether I can hear of it so as to go over and get mine or not, shall try to. The Regt is about 5 miles from here. I hear it is in a fine place. good water &c.

When you direct my letters after this, leave of the company / and Regt and just direct them to 2d Division Sharp Shooters 18 Army Corps

It is awful lonesome here, nothing to do and nothing going on. No money to buy papers half of the time. It worse than Petersburg for lonesomeness I had a letter from Lefever. He said my gun started the 10th I am looking for it every day. They only get  the express once in three days at Div Hd Qrs. It may be along the next time it comes which will be Monday. I suppose it was directed to the Regt but it will have to come to the Div first and I shall watch for it

I am out of stamps for I had to lend a couple to boys who had none so shall send this unpaid

Love to all—write soon

Your Affct Bro.
