Charles E. Reed to Samuel P. Reed, 4 September 1864
Camp near Point of Rocks
Sept 4th 1864

Dear Brother
I recd your letter this morning also a paper containing the tomatoes.

We are having quite a good time now. It is very quiet here. All we can hear is the rumbling of the cannons at Petersburg. Last night I could hear see the shells burst from here. The sharp shooters are having nothing to do now. The Regt has to go on picket. There is no firing though The Rebs have a great deal of confidence in the Chicago convention. They say we will yet live together in peace

What do you think of the nom- / ination of McClelland? he has a good many more friends in the army now than he did last spring. Unless the North send the men along pretty fast and sustain the army so we can win some victories Mac will surely be elected.

Night before last we had news of the capture of Atlanta. I expect to see it in the papers to night. Hood evacuated I believe If he should come right here with his army He would give Grant a hard one. Some parts of our line in front of Petersburg are very light because we have not the men to put there.

Company K of the Mt. Rifles (Almerons Co.) came up here yesterday. I saw the boys they are all fat dont look as if they had / been doing anything this summer I want you to send me a pair of suspenders These are all worn out I have got. I cant get a pair less than 1.25 or $1.50 Dont send me a pair with rubber in them. Get a pair long enough. I hope you will send me some powder with the rifle also some soft lead

How many recruits have you raised in town

I cant think of any thing to write. We expect our knapsacks tomorrow. Send the gun along as soon as you can

Love to Willie and all the rest

Your Bro.
