Sharp Shooters, Aug 20th 1864

Dear Sister
I recd your letter two or three days ago the money all right. I should have answered before but could not very well We moved day before yesterday about ¾ of a mile to the left opposite Burnsides old line. I dont know where he has gone farther to the left I guess. It has kept me farther to the left me pretty busy besides it rained all day yesterday and some the day before Two nights now I have lain down wet through. It dont seem to hurt a fellow any. The sun has come out and it fairly burns. I dont the place we are in / as well as the old one. The Rebs throw the shells in here pretty handy. The first night the Johnies got us up about 12 O'Clock and kept us up till about three. They fell all around us no one was hurt though. yesterday we dug yesterday a hole in the ground and put our tent over it. I hardly think they will get me out again Mark Swift came back yesterday he has been was wounded and has been home. He said Lefever was making my gun. I got an Independent this week

I cant write to day much two of the boys are talking and I make more mistakes than a few. I got a letter from Horace Gilbert yesterday. He seems to have a little idea of enlisting / Tell I would advise him not too. I dont want any more of my friends in the army than necessary. They dont know any thing about hardship till they get here. I shall look for a letter from Sam in a day or two. I forgot to tell you what a flood we had here on Monday The ravine we were encamped in was like a river. A number were drowned. Sutlers were washed out clean Our sutler lost every thing but his money.

Love to all,

Tell Willie I got his paper

Your Affc't Bro—
Charles
