Charles E. Reed to Caroline A. Reed, 7 June 1864
Camp of Division Sharp Shooters
Thursday Morning July 7th 1864
Dear Sister
I have just got up and washed and as it is cool and quiet I thought it would be a good time to answer your letter which was recd day before yesterday the money all right. I get all your letters now and as quick as I did at Yorktown or Norfolk Since I have been at my new business I have not been to the front at all I have all I can tend to here. I have to draw whiskey & deal it out to the boys. The C.S. where I get my rations is two miles in rear of here so it makes quite a walk. This is a pleasant morning nice cool breeze. Things are moving along here about as usual, about the same shelling and musketry. I can hear the muskets crack now, one about every three seconds. I have been feeling first rate lately. Our Regt is in now. I expect they go out to night. Co "G" only reports about fifteen men for duty now, so many are sick. I should like to see your new team you did not write how old they are. I suppose Sam will write about / them. I want him to write how the sheep sheared to. He has not written in a good while I want you to send me some anguintine (I dont know how to spell it) for I have to fight lice like fun. Every body has got them. I think they get in the trenches so many different ones laying in them. I cant think of any thing more to write. I believe I shall write Aunt Eliza a letter some day when I feel like it I wonder she would answer it. What do think about the draft now. No $300 exempts a man. They should have left it for three years, for I guess it will take as long as that. I see the Rebs are going into Pennsylvania again. I wish they were all up there. We have not got our guns yet but expect them every day. I believe they are to be the Spencer repeating rifle. The Capt could not get a regular target gun All of those are private property I am getting hungry for breakfast so will close
Love to all particularly to Willie I wish I had something to send him
your Affectionate Brother
