Camp Vermilion Ville. La Aug. 10th. 1863
 
Dear wife and children A few lines you all to let you now that I am in bad health at this time I have bin very low with the billious feaver I was take down on the first day of this mounth and lay with the feaver eight dayes with out it ever cooling I have got it broke now and I am on the mend at this time & think I will able for duty in a few dayes now hoping when this comes to hand that it ma find you all well and doing well health is mity bad in camp at present ther is a gradeal of sickness hear in camp I do not now when I will be at home I have trided to git a dis charg Ben tendered my resignation and it was not excep of I will come as soon as posable
 
Remember well and Bare in mind a faithful friend is hard
