Camp Vermillion
Sunday
August 30th 1863
Dear Wife I avail myself of this opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know that I am still in the enjoyment of a reasonable portion of health & hope these few lines may find you enjoying like blessings I have not much news to write to you that is of interest I received two letters from you last thursday night one dated June 23d on August 2d which I read with a great deal of pleasure as I had not heard from you for sometime before I am sorrow to hear of the children having the whooping cough but I do not think it dangerous & now is as good a time perhaps as they could have / it.
it as it pleasant weather & no sudden changes though I would much rather I was at home with them and I know it will be very hard on you if they should be any ways bad you write in your letter that you had been a plumb hunting on Red river I am glad to hear of you taking some pleasure trips I am sorrow you did not get any or rather that they were not ripe as I do not know whether you got any or not but didnt suppose you did as they were not ripe. I had gotten the news that you had sold the old mare I am glad that Jess is taking care of my horse I think he will take good care of him & he ought to be used some /
I still think that was the filly that went off with Stones horses I am glad that people had good luck in saving their grain you write you think grain will be high but Ben's wife writes [faded] that is corn has been engaged at 25 cts a bushel but that will not last long I know I was sorrow to hear of you having no garden & from what you write I know that you cant keep the hogs out well about the only way to fix would be with a new fence & I am sorry I ant there to do it I worked enough at it last spring to make it good you wrote that mr McCowen & Lattie had brought /
in a load of goods but sold them verry high from what you write I think they are about as high here, calico is 3.50 cts a yd. coffee the last I heard of selling was 10 dollars a lb watermelons sell here from 1 to 7 dollars apiece a watermelon that would make a man a good boot would be $2 cheese 1.25 per lb in fact things sell [faded, paper fold] asks that is in eatables & tobacco I am verry sorry you have no shoes for I know it hurts you to do without them not withstanding you write as though you did not care if I could send you a pair I would try to get them here but I could not send them unless I would do like some
