Oct 3 1863
Dear Son
I will write a few lines to you your mother writes to me very flattering of the way you are learning which gives me a great deal of pleasure to learn that you are trying to learn something while your Father is away from you let me say to you to learn well what you do learn I know you are a very good boy & will be good to your Mother Brothers & Schoolmates but I fear that you being in the company of so many boys will get in to the habit of using bad or profane language such as swearing if you love your father & mother do not swear or tell falshoods let me entreat you under no circumstances to tell an untruth. Obey your teachers & be good to them & they will be good to you help your Ma all you can when you are at home She has been very good to you to do evry thing herself & let you go to school Love Johny & Willie wich I know you will your Father
