Thomas W. Johnson Fragment, undated
[fragment]
Talk of [paper hole] if they do not get letters from home that is to write it & take themselves as to that letter I wrote to Col Montague about your provision I was very much out of humor at that time & wrote perhaps more than I ought but on mature consideration if there is money appropriated for that purpose I think we need as bad as most any person & worse than a great many that are getting it therefore I would advise you to take it if they will furnish it to you & your wood also next winter if you can get it as I do not see how else you will get it I do not wish for you to have to run round to get these things & if you cant get them /
without let them go
furnish you & would
the money you could
to it for you. I know
sensitive on that point
but when I look around
the number of men
the publicks moneys
value received for it I
nothing but just I
that much for my
myself I have to spend some money but I will make as little do me as possible tell Eddy that it gives me a great deal of pleasure to hear how he is a learning & I know that he has been a good boy & studied his book well I think I have a good & smart child /
try to please his
which I praise him
good to have such
think Johny & Willie
boys too Johny will
his letters but after
learn well & you my
take all the pains
teaching such children
to a blessing to you
it depends a great
deal upon the principles you inculcate in them how much happiness they may be to you hereafter I have not heard from Edward since I left home I think I will write to him & see if I cant get a letter from him /
I received the [paper hole, faded] ly McCowen but have not seen him yet they are between here & Alexandria I hardly know what to think about those fellows that the Indians caught Ogden's [?] it dont seem like they ought to hang they having counterfeit money ought to go against them I am sorry to hear of them again you write that your school is out you did not say but I supposed she would teach again I am very glad they have a good teacher there & will be glad if she will teach on you write in praise of Eddy tell him it makes me glad to hear of him doing so well you said you were making a hat to day for his [?] well that is doing well do not mind [faded]
[side margin]
